Student of the Month

Southern Local Jr./Sr. High School student of the month for May is Kayla Huff.  Kayla is the daughter of Troy Huff and Shawna Crawford and resides in Wellsville.  Kayla ranks fourth in her class and maintains a 3.76 GPA.

Throughout her high school career, Kayla has been accountable with her behavior and academics.  Due to her accountability in the classroom, different possible career pathways have become available and are not limited, due to academic dilemmas.  

Besides Kayla's academics, she has been a mainstay with Southern Local athletics.  She has been a cheerleader for both basketball and football.  As a cheerleader, she has earned an Indian award and a Leadership award.  Furthermore, Kayla can also be seen as a pitcher for the softball team.

When not in school or playing athletics, Kayla can be seen in one of many organizations.  Some of the organizations she belongs to include the Treasurer of National Technician Honor Society, Student Council, Drama Club, Spanish Club, and Treasurer of Cosmetology.  Furthermore, Kayla still manages to maintain a job as a waitress at the Valley Drive In.  After high school, Kayla plans to pursue a degree in Physical Therapy at Kent State (East Liverpool).

2014 April Student of the Month

Student of the Month

Southern Local Jr./Sr. High School student of the month for April is Jesse Liggitt.  Jesse is the son of Diane and Jerry and currently resides in Lisbon.  Jesse is ranked 20th in his class and has a GPA of 3.24.

Throughout his high school career, Jesse has built a strong rapport with students and staff.  He is very outgoing, which is evident at school assembly's and plays.  Jesse can be seen and heard at most school activities.  He does not shy away from his school spirit and everyone at Southern Local, students and staff, look forward to hearing is "Indian" chant.  Besides displaying great school spirit, Jesse is a consistent worker in regards to his academics.  As a Freshman, he was nominated as a student ambassador for Student to Student.  Throughout his Junior and Senior years, Jesse was a Boys State Delegate and student of the month.

Outside of his academics, Jesse is a dependable figure within the band and drama club, as well as, lettering in baseball.  He has the ability to generate excitement and/or comedy from the audience, depending on the situation.  He is a very easy person to communicate with and looks for the best in everyone.  Due to his constant energy in the band, he plans on pursuing a degree in Music Education at Ohio University.

2014 March Student of the Month

Student of the Month

Southern Local Jr./Sr. High School student of the month for March is Kaylee McCaffery. Kaylee is the daughter of Linda and John McCaffery, has a GPA of 3.85 and is ranked second in her class.

Academically speaking, Kaylee has been on the honor role all four years at Southern Local. She has also been a part of the National Honor Society. While in school, Kaylee is constantly smiling and full of energy. She is very easy to talk to and is very optimistic about life. Kaylee maintains a positive rapport with all her teachers and peers. However, if you cannot find her in a classroom, she is probably with the cheerleaders. Kaylee has earned a varsity letter in basketball and football since her Sophomore year. She was also awarded the Indian award for football cheerleading her Senior year.

Throughout all her accomplishments, Kaylee still finds time to maintain a place of employment at Barto's Drive In for the last three years. When discussing her future endeavors, Kaylee would like attend either Kent State or Akron University to pursue a degree as an Obstetric nurse.

2014 February Student of the Month

Southern Local Jr./Sr. High School student of the month for February is Casey Howdershelt. Casey is the daughter of Raymond Howdershelt, maintains a 3.1 GPA and is ranked 24th in her class.

 

Academically speaking, Casey has been on the honor roll most of her time during high school. Throughout the hallways, Casey always has a smile on her face and is easily approachable, as well as, willing to assist anyone. Although she has developed good study habits, sports have always played a significant role in her life, including softball, volleyball, and cheerleading. Casey has lettered in softball every year throughout her high school career, including offensive awards during her sophomore year. As a senior, she lettered in volleyball.

 

Outside of school, Casey enjoys volunteering her time at church with her great grandmother and for the American Red Cross blood drives. When she is not too busy volunteering her time, she maintains employment at the Dollar General. Finally, after high school Casey plans on attending Kent State and pursuing a degree in PTA (Physical Therapy Assistant).

2014 January Student of the Month

Student of the Month

Southern Local Jr./Sr. High School student of the month for January is Brandi Hunt.  Brandi is the daughter of Deena and Robbie Hunt.  She has a GPA of 3.3 and is ranked 18th in her class.

Throughout her high school career Brandi has been awarded the "most improved award" and has been a constant among different clubs and sports.  She has been involved in the Spanish club for four years, as well as, developing an artistic eye.  Therefore, she joined the Art club this year.  While developing an interest for Spanish and Art, she has also developed a passion for volleyball.  Brandi has participated in volleyball for the last four years and lettered in each of the last three years.

Despite being active in different groups and sports, Brandi is able to maintain employment at Summer Fun Pools and Spas.  Furthermore, she plans on attending Youngstown State University in the fall and pursuing a degree within the medical field.

2013 December Student of the Month

Southern Local Jr./Sr. High School student of the month for December is Randi Carroll.  She is the daughter of Eric and Rebecca Smith, resides in Salineville and is ranked 4th in her class with a 3.7 GPA.

Throughout her high school career, Randi has had numerous different academic accolades.  As a freshman, Randi was a part of student council and Spanish club.  Since her sophomore year, she has been class vice president and involved with the Spanish club.  Throughout her junior and senior years, Randi was in the National Honor Society.  Her leadership within the NHS and student council has assisted with her extracurricular activities.  As a member of the marching band for four years, Randi was a section leader for three of those years.  Therefore, leadership is a strong characteristic for her.  With band, she also competed in softball throughout her high school career.  

After school, Randi still finds enough time to maintain a job at the Riverside Roadhouse.  Furthermore, when discussing her future, she plans on pursuing a career in accounting & business management at Kent State University.

2013 October Student of the Month

Southern Local Jr./Sr. High School student of the month for October is Jared Shilot.  Jared is the son of Ms. Marguerite Smuck and Mr. Paul Shilot and resides in Wellsville.  Jared's class rank is eighth and maintains a GPA of 3.6.

 

Some of Jared's academic awards include honor role from freshman through junior years, outstanding student in American History as a sophomore, Math awards, and National Honor Society.

 

Jared's athletic awards, in football, consist of offensive rookie of the year as a sophomore, school record for receiving yards, 1st team all district, 1st team all county, all state honorable mention, and team captain.  He also received a defensive award in basketball and the top sprinter award in track.  Outside of school Jared is a member of the Destiny House Assembly of God, Relay for Life and a mentor for Southern Local.

 

Jared devotes numerous hours to many different activities and still maintains a job.  Currently, he works at the Riverside Roadhouse and has been employed there since April 2012.  Finally, Jared plans to attend college and pursue a degree as a Physical or Occupational Therapist.

2013 November Student of the Month

Southern Local Jr./Sr. High School student of the month for November is Jimmy Giannone.  Jimmy is the son of Debbie and Stefan Giannone, resides in Summitville and is ranked 21st in his class with a 3.2 GPA.

Some of his academic awards include honor role  freshman, sophomore and senior years, as well as,  perfect attendance during his sophomore year.  Besides his academics, Jimmy has also excelled outside the classroom.  He assists with Project More, SIG squad, and is a four year letter winner in golf, while also assisting the basketball team over the last three years.

Outside of school Jimmy maintains his time by hunting and assisting Don Watkins with turkey calls and Henry Bergfield as a farm hand, in which, will definitely assist with his career goals.  He plans on attending Eastern Gateway Community College for two years and then transferring to Kent State to pursue a career as a Wildlife officer.

2013 September Student of the Month

Southern Local/Salineville Kiwanis

Southern Local Jr./Sr. High School Kiwanis student of the month for September is Tesa Calvin.  Tesa is the daughter of Ms. Linda Beadnell and Mr. John Calvin.  Tesa resides in Salineville and is ranked first in her class with a 4.0 GPA.  

Some of her academic awards include perfect attendance and honor role throughout her high school career, student of the year for her freshman and junior years, and different awards for English, Biology, World History, and Chemistry.  Tesa was also very active with athletics as well.  Some of her athletic awards include All-Academic Team for softball, Indian award for fall cheerleading, three year letter winner for softball, and two year letter winner for cheerleading.

Tesa has been engaged in numerous school activities.  Some of these activities include Spanish club president, student council president, National Honor Society treasurer, and class president for all four years of high school.  In between her busy schedules, Tesa maintains a job a Shale Tavern and Grille as a hostess.  Furthermore, she plans on attending college and pursuing a degree in the medical field.
