Southern Local/Salineville Kiwanis

Ms. Emilie Blissenbach, daughter of Karl and Carrie Blissenbach of Lisbon has been selected as the May Salineville Kiwanis Student of the Month.  Emilie currently has a 3.518 GPA which places her 15th in the senior class at Southern Local High School. She has been on the A-B Honor Roll all 4 years of school. As a junior, Emilie was inducted into the National Honor Society and this year she is the NHS president.  Emilie also serves as her senior class secretary.

Emilie has been involved and lettered in track all 4 years. As a freshman and junior she received the Indian Dedication Award. Her sophomore year gained her the Sprinter High Point Award. Emilie was a basketball cheerleader her junior and senior years. 

Emilie has participated in marching and concert bands for 4 years. This spring she was the cowardly lion in the school musical The Wizard of Oz. She has also participated in the drama club productions throughout all 4 years.

Outside of school Emilie keeps herself busy with 4H and works part-time at the Lisbon Veterinary Clinic.

After graduation Emilie will be attending Findley University where she will dual major in Pre-veterinary Medicine and Biology and then attend the Ohio State University for a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine.

Kiwanis Student of the Month

Sonny Ketchum is the son of Lorrie and Paul Ketchum. As a freshman and Sophomore Sonny received all A’s and perfect attendance. In his Junior and Senior years Sonny has received all A’s and B’s as well as perfect attendance. In his Junior year Sonny was on the Dean’s List during the spring semester at Kent State University.

Sonny has lettered in Band all four years at Southern Local High School. Outside of school Sonny is an active member of Boy Scouts Troop 54, a staff member at Cub Scout Day Camp, Staff member of National Youth Leadership Program, active member of marching band concert band and pep bands. Sonny was also a member of the Spanish Club his Freshman through Junior years and was inducted into the National Honor Society his Senior Year.

His future educational plans are to attend the University of Akron and major in Mechanical Engineering.

2013 March Student of the Month

Southern Local/Salineville Kiwanis

Ms. Lindsay Bonam, daughter of Joe and Midge Bonam of Salineville has been selected as the March student of the month.  Lindsay currently has a 3.61 GPA which places her 12th in the senior class at Southern Local High School. 

For the last 6 years Lindsay has been active in marching, concert, and pep band.  She is a mentor in Project MORE.  In the past, she has sang in the community choir. 

As a Junior, Lindsay was inducted into the National Honor Society and this year she is the NHS treasurer.  Currently she is serving her second year as the the Reporter for the FFA Chapter and has been awarded the officer gold rating and the officer book gold rating. 

Lindsay has volunteered at her church, the Salineville United Methodist church for over 3 years.  She teaches Sunday School and a Youth Group Class. 

After graduation Lindsay will be attending Mount Union University where she will major in Early Childhood Education/Intervention Specialist with a minor in youth ministry.

January Kiwanis Student of the Month

Emily Jenkins daughter of Mike and Rochelle Jenkins of Salineville is the January Kiwanis Student of the month. Emily has a 3.2 GPA and is ranked 21st in her class.

Emily has been on the honor roll her entire high school career. Her academic awards have been: freshman year she earned all A’s in science, sophomore year academic English award, junior year most improved in chemistry and senior year National Honor Society.

In athletics, Emily currently holds the record for most points in volleyball which she received her junior year and most kills in volleyball her senior year. She is a 2 year varsity letter winner in volleyball; she was the volleyball team captain and currently is a basketball team captain. Emily was also a recipient of the Indian award during volleyball.

Emily is active in National Honor Society, Community Service, Church organizations, Blood Drive, Student Council, class officer, homecoming court, Habitat for Humanity, FFA, Spanish Club, Pep Club, and Yearbook Club.

While not busy with school activities Emily is employed by Sunkiss and Turtle beach tanning as well as Rue 21.

Upon graduation Emily is planning on attending Kent State University and majoring in business.

2012 December Kiwanis Student of the Month

Southern Local/Salineville Kiwanis

Mr. Douglas Tice, son of Keith and Paula Tice of Salineville is the December Kiwanis Student of the Month. Doug has a 3.909 GPA and is ranked fourth in the senior class at Southern Local Jr./Sr. High School. When Doug was a freshman he was awarded with the Outstanding English Achievement Award and the World History Award. He was a varsity letter winner in golf and was named to the ITCL All-Academic team. After his sophomore year he was awarded with the Chemistry I Academic Excellence Award and the Highest Spanish grade. With the golf team he earned his second varsity letter was named Honorable mention ITCL golf and ITCL All-Academic Team. At the end of his junior year he was awarded the English Academic Acievement Award and the Pre Calculus Outstanding Achievement Award. When the golf season came to an end, Doug received his third varsity letter and was named to the second team All ITCL. Currently during his senior year, Doug has been awarded his fourth varsity letter in golf and was named first team ALL ITCL. He is currently in the Sophomores to Seniors program at Kent State University.

Douglas is very active in many activities and organizations. He is a lector at St. Jon’s Catholic Church and a member of the Spanish Club. He placed second at the Valley Scholastic Golf Tournament in 2012. In 2007, Doug attended Leardship training; he became a member of National Honor Society in 2012 as has been a Science Fair Judge in 2011 and 2012.

Upon graduation Douglas will be attending Kent State University for a four year nursing degree, and then continuing on to become a nurse pracititioner. After graduating from Kent, Douglas plans on residing in Pittsburgh or Baltimore.

2012 November Kiwanis Student of the Month

Southern Local/Salineville Kiwanis

 

Mr. Steven Treadway son of Bob and Kate Moore of Salineville has been selected as the November student of the month. Steven currently has a 3.1 GPA which places him 26th in the senior class at Southern Local High School. Steven has been on the A/B Honor Roll his freshman and junior year and currently he is on the all A Honor Roll.

 

Through athletics Steven has received numerous awards and is a 4 year letterman in football, 2 year letterman in track and a one year letterman in baseball.   In football, his freshman year he received the Special Teams Award, his sophomore year he was 1st Team all ITCL, Review 1st Team and Special Weapons award, junior year he was 2nd team ITCL, Review 1st team, and 1st team Quad County, his senior year he was placed on the 1st ITCL 1st team and Review 1st Team. During the Wellsville game Steven kicked a 52 yard field goal which now stands as the longest field goal at Southern Local. In track Steven’s events are discus, long jump, and hurdles. In 2010, he was awarded the Coaches award in track.

 

Steven is involved in many activities not only at Southern but within the community. He is a member of FFA where he currently is the Vice President and he is a member of the Parliamentary Procedure Team. He is a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and of the Bethel Presbyterian Youth Group. At school he is in student council, art club, science club, TEC club and the SIG Squad. During his free time he likes to hunt and fish. Steven is employed as the grounds keeper at Youth with a Purpose Boy’s home.

After high school Steven would like to be a kicker for a football team at a university yet to be determined or he is considering joining the U.S. Navy and entering the Deep Sea Diving Program.

2012 October Kiwanis Student of the Month

The October Salineville Kiwanis Student of the Month is Ms. Billie Milhoan.  She is the daughter of Bonnie Milhoan of Salineville and Howard Milhoan of Lisbon. Billie is currently has a 3.275 GPA, which places her 20th in the graduating class this year at Southern Local High School.

Billie has been on the A-B Honor Roll her sophomore through senior year. Her junior year she was inducted in to the National Honor Society and continues to be active in this organization her senior year. Through this organization she has helped out with Habitat for Humanity. Billie was a member of the JV volleyball team her freshman and sophomore year.

Through her involvement in 4-H she has taken horse, market hog, and rabbit projects to the Columbiana County fair. She was a Jr. Leader for 2 years and was the 2011-2012 Jr. Leader president. She served on the Jr. Fair Board committee for 2 years where she was the committee chair for the horse show at the fair. She has been a counselor at Camp Whitewood for younger 4-H members for 2 years.

Billie is an active member in Cowboy Up Youth Rodeo where she is a contestant in barrel racing, pole bending, and goat tail tying.

During her time at Southern Local Billie has been active in the Southern Local FFA Chapter for 3 years. She has competed on the Parliamentary Procedure Team, Livestock judging team, attended state and national conventions. She has done a variety of community service projects through FFA including; landscaping the school grounds, the Akron Children’s fundraiser, FFA food stand at the fair, American Red Cross geranium sale, and the school bench project. She has also assisted with FFA week activities such as: Ag Olympics, FFA banquet, and the fair booth.

When Billie is not busy here at school she is employed by Norkus Orchards. Upon graduation from Southern Local Billie would like to attend college to study business.

2012 September Kiwanis Student of the Month

Southern Local/Salineville Kiwanis

 

The September Salineville Kiwanis Student of the Month from Southern Local High School is Mr. Luke Griffith. He is the son of Chris and Kim Griffith. Luke is currently a senior with a GPA of 3.897, which places him 4th in his graduating class.

 During his freshman and sophomore year, Luke received all A’s and B’s in his academics. His junior year Luke earned the all “A” Honor Roll.

 

Luke is also an athlete who participates in football and basketball. He played junior varsity his freshman year for both sports. He lettered varsity his sophomore, junior, and senior years. Luke received 2nd Team ITCL and First Team ITCL All-County in basketball. In addition he was named 1st Team ITCL, and Columbiana County Quad-County for football.

 

 Luke is a member of National Honor Society, TEC Club, yearbook, and he participates in the school morning news broadcast.

 Luke is undecided about a college but wants to major in Pre-Medicine.
